10-Digit Dialing

If you are in an area that uses 10-digit dialing or if you will be roaming to an area that uses 10-digit dialing, you will need to use the instructions for your operating system below to set your dialer to allow it to dial 10-digit numbers as a local call.

These instructions tell you how to take a dialing profile you already have and change it for 10-digit dialing. You only need to do this one time for each dialing profile you are updating for 10-digit dialing.

If you have difficulty connecting using 10-digit dialing, look at Troubleshooting for 10-Digit Dialing.

Windows 95:

1. Open the Dial-Up Networking folder by double-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop (if you have renamed "My Computer", then double-click on the icon with the new name). Double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.

Note: In this window you will see the list of the dialer connections you have configured (files or icons). If you have not yet created a dialer connection, you need to create a new dialing profile using the instructions in Setting up Roaming Service, then return here for instructions on changing your profile for 10-digit dialing.

2. In the Dial-Up Networking folder select the dialer profile you would like to change by clicking only once on it. If you only have one dialer connection, choose that file or icon. Often the dialer icon is called "(Your user name)'s ISP Account" or could be called with a name of a city if it is used for roaming. In this case we are selecting the dialer connection called "My Connection".

3. Open the "File" menu and click Properties.

4. Now, you will see a window from which you can change the settings of the dialer. When you open the dialer you will see that there is a 7-digit phone number in the "Telephone number box". For example, the dialer for "My Connection" has been set to make a local call, with area code "303" and phone number "555-1212". To set up the dialer to dial 10 digits, you will have to deselect the "Use country code and area code" check box by clicking on it.

5. Now the dialer is set up to dial the number exactly as you enter it in the "Telephone number" box. Type the 10-digit phone number (area code + 7-digit phone number) you will be dialing into the "Telephone number" box, including any numbers the dialer will need to make the call properly (e.g., "9" to access an outside line). In the example below, notice that all 10 digits plus an access code of "9" were written in the "Telephone number" box.

6. Once you have finished your changes, click "OK" to save them.

7. When you are ready to get connected, you can either double-click on your dialer icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder or if you have created a shortcut on your desktop, you can double-click on the connection icon, then:

On the "Connect To" window check your user name and make sure that the password is filled in.
Check that the location on the "Dialing from" box is the right one.
Click the "Connect" button.
Once you are connected, start Netscape.

Windows NT:

1. To find the dialer connection you need to change to use 10-digit dialing, you can either find the connection shortcut on your desktop or you can find the connection file or icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder.

If you created a shortcut on the desktop, find the connection icon you would like to change and select it by single-clicking on it with the right mouse button. A drop-down menu will open. Select "Properties" from the menu. Continue on step 2.
If you do not have a shortcut for your dialer connection on your desktop, open the Dial-Up Networking folder by double-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop (if you have renamed "My Computer", then double-click on the icon with the same name). Then double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.
In the "Dial-Up Networking" window, from the "Phonebook entry to dial" drop-down list, select the dialer connection you would like to change.

Note: If you have not yet created a dialer connection, you need to create a new dialing profile using the instructions in Setting up Roaming Service, then return here for instructions on changing your profile for 10-digit dialing.

Click the "More" button and from the menu, select "Edit entry and modem properties". Continue on step 3.

2. You will see a window named for the connection you are changing (like the one in the example below). Click the "Settings" tab near the top of the window, and then click the "Edit" button to change the settings of this connection.

3. A window called "Edit Phonebook Entry" will appear.

4. Now you need to deselect the "Use Telephony dialing properties" check box by clicking on it.

5. Type the 10-digit phone number (area code + 7-digit phone number) you will be dialing, including any numbers the dialer will need to make the call properly (e.g., "9" to access an outside line), into the "Phone number" box exactly as you want the dialer to dial it. Below is a picture of the dialer screen once the dialer is set up for 10-digit dialing.

6. Click the "OK" button to save your changes.

7. If you receive the "Dial-Up Networking" message that reads "The entry is connected. Your changes will be applied the next time the entry is dialed". Click the "OK" button again to finish the process.

8. When you are ready to get connected:

If you created a shortcut on the desktop, double-click on the shortcut's connection you would like to use for the specific roaming location:

Check your user name* and make sure that the password box is filled in.
Click the "OK" button.
Once you are connected, start Netscape.

If you did not create a shortcut, double-click on "My Computer" icon on the desktop, then double-click the "Dial-Up Networking" icon and select the dialer connection you would like to use from the "Phonebook entry to dial" drop-down list:

Click the "Dial" button.
Once you are connected, start Netscape.

Note: When you dial in with this dialer, if you have changed your location you need to make sure that your dialer has the proper location before you click on the shortcut. To do this you need to:

1.Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop (if you have renamed "My Computer", then click on the icon with the new name), then double-click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.

2. Click the "Properties" button, and the window "ShivaRemote Properties" will appear.

3. Select "Specify Exact Number" by clicking on the radio button and type the 10-digit phone number (area code + 7-digit phone number) you will be dialing, including any numbers the dialer will need to make the call properly (e.g., "9" to access an outside line), into the "Number to Dial " box exactly as you want the dialer to dial it. Below is a picture of the dialer screen once the dialer is set up for 10-digit dialing.

5. Click the "OK" button when you finish changing the number.

6. You will then receive a "ShivaRemote" message that reads "Connection file settings have not been saved. Do you want to save these changes?". Click the "Yes" button to save the changes.

7. Next, you will see a "Save Connection File" window. Select the file that corresponds to the dialer you are changing. Click the "OK" button.
